Author Review:Gene Stratton Porter1863 - 1924
Geneva Stratton was the youngest of the twelve children in her family. She was born on a farm in Indiana. Her father loved to read aloud and read many stories to Geneva and her brothers and sisters.
Geneva much preferred to be outside playing and exploring than sitting indoors in a school classroom. Still, she learned to read early. Later in life she told others she thought she learned more by observing nature than reading about it in textbooks. (One of my favorite things about her!)
Geneva later married Charles Darwin Porter and they moved to a small town on the edge of a swampy area in northeast Indiana called "The Limberlost." Many of her books are about this area. Her first book, The Song of the Cardinal, was published in 1903.
I will have to admit for a long time I thought Gene Porter was a man! Now I know better! Many of her books are available again after being out-of-print for a while. It's also interesting to know that over 20 movies were made from her books and stories.
